We were thrilled to read in Travel and Leisure Magazine's World's Best Award's for 2011 that Abaco debuted for the first time in second place for favourite Caribbean Islands . This is so exciting as it is the magazine's nearly five million readers that vote for there favourite place to stay. Abaco is unique from the other Bahamain Islands as it does not have any large well known named hotels but we offer individualised small boutique hotels and privately owned rental homes that cater to everyone's budget. The Abaco's and Green Turtle Cay in particular remind people of vacations that they took as children with there parents . Where you get to spend one on one time with your family and the fast pace of your life just fades away with everyday that you spend here. It is a slow pace and the people here are genuine, it is a friendly community.

This was posted on the Abaco Forum by a guest who visited Green Turtle Cay for the first time

“I have to say that the gentle voices of the locals along with the unrushed care of Abaco will stay with me always when I think back to this maiden trip. It is hard to believe that there is a place in the world that can move you without even noticing until it is gone from your life. It is my highest desire to go back one day and attempt to expose my three boys to this mystical existence.”

Anouther post from a guest returning from a trip to Green Turtle Cay “Beautiful beaches (all public), everything accessible by cart, marinas and boat rentals at your service, snorkeling, fishing, a close knit community that welcomes new visitors, and a glimpse of life the way it should be lived…Those of us that found this little piece of heaven are the luckiest people on earth.”

Native Creations

This gift shop is owned by Carolyn Cash and is my favourite place to go to find gifts . The little shop is in the heart of New Plymouth . Carolyn sells, native hand made wooden bowls , & jewellery boxes, Androsia table cloths and table mats with matching napkins all in the famous Androsia bright colors. They also have a large selection of Abaco Ceramics which is hand made pottery produced right here in Abaco . Paintings by local artists, driftwood frames, sea glass jewellery, native straw bags, childrens books and t shirts. The shop is open nearly everyday except Sunday from 9am-12 noon and then from 2pm until 4 pm.

The Green Turtle Club

Lynn Johnson ,the general manager has a great eye for purchasing for the club's gift shop . It is the only place on the island where you can purchase a bathing suit and wrap. They also carry a nice range of GT Club logo polo shirts and t shirts for men, women and children, jewellery, native straw bags, , and caps. They are open 7 days a week from 8 am until 6 pm.

Shavone's Home & Garden

They range from gourmet dining at The Green Turtle Club, to family Bahamian home cooking at places like Harvey's Grill and to go places like 2 Shorty's, so there is a taste and budget to suit everyone. I am going to start with the restaurants that are in New Plymouth :

McIntosh Restaurant & Bakery

This family owned restaurant is just at the bottom of the steep hill as you come into the village and is owned and operated by Jimmy & Denise McIntosh helped out by there four lovely children. Denise is up before the sun rises baking bread and making her famous pies and cakes. They serve breakfast, lunch and dinner. Breakfast is served from 8 am until 11 am and you can find baked goods, bacon and eggs or try a Bahamian favourite tuna fish and grits.

Lunch is served from 11:30am until 3 pm and they have fried local fish, conch, burgers and sandwiches. Lunch specials are offered every day. Dinner is served from 5:30pm until 8.30pm serving ribs, fish, fried chicken and cracked lobster served with rice, macaroni and potato salad.
The Blue Bee Bar

The Blue Bee Bar was what it implies a bar until three years ago when they decided to add a restaurant. Corp Smith is the chef and he works wonders in the kitchen, my favourite is there broiled grouper or there Goombay Grouper. They serve dinner from 5:30pm until 9pm and serve drinks with dinner or after dinner you can go into the bar and pull up a bar stool and chat with Violet.

Lisa is my daughter in law, she married my son Michael three years ago and they have a little boy Carter, my first grandchild !. Harvey's started out as a little place on the waterfront where you could buy a burger and ice cream and sit on the picnic benches on the beach.
I am going to start with the three food stores as I love to cook and eat ! You can e mail Maria with a list of groceries and liquor and we will be more than happy to stock the house for your arrival.

Right next-door to our office is Curry's, it is owned by Gene and Debbie Lowe and there daughter Michelle operates the store along with Shana. In the store you will find lobster, conch and local fish , fresh homemade bread every Thursday, fresh fruits and vegetables and a wide selection of dry goods. Currys also sales cubed bags of ice if you need a large bag to take in the boat with you.

Curry's is open Mondays-Saturdays 8am-6pm they also have a dock so you can pull up by boat.

The next food store is Lowe's which is owned by Minerva and the Lowe family and operated by three lovely ladies Betsy,Jessica and Tanya . Minerva's husband Pat travels to Marsh Harbour most days so check in daily to see what new items he has been able to pick up in the "big city ". The store sales a wide selection of groceries, including fresh fruits and vegetables, they normally have great avocados and be on the look out for tomatoes grown by Tanya's dad Andy . They also have fresh home made bread , home made cakes ,home made ice cream and conch salad. If you are celebrating a birthday or getting married while on the island then ask Jessica to make your cake they are delicious and beautiful. They also have a side room that sales Guy Harvey t shirts, toys, sandals and miscellaneous items. Lowe's is the only food store that opens on most holidays and Sunday's after church. There hours are Monday-Saturday 8am-7pm and 12 noon until 5 pm on Sundays.

LOWE"S FOOD STORE

Bahamanians know how to enjoy life. “Maybe it's our 'Bahama Mamas,' our sweet sea breeze, our conch salad, and fun loving people,” suggests Kendenique Campbell-Moss, a senior executive at the Bahamas Tourism Ministry.
A Bahamian-issued marriage license is valid for 90 days for those seeking early application. You can write to the Registrar General prior to your arrival at: P.O. Box H-5553, Nassau, Bahamas. Or you can visit the local Government Administrator's Office on Green Turtle Cay to obtain a marriage license.

If either party has been divorced, the original final decree or a certified copy (with a raised or colored seal) must be produced. For European residents, the original decree or a certified copy (with a raised or colored seal) must be produced in the native language along with a translated certified or notarized copy in English.

If either party is widowed, the death certificate of the deceased spouse must be produced.

The parties must produce passports along with immigration forms that are given at the time of entry into The Bahamas.

No blood test is necessary.

The fee for the marriage license is $100

If you have never been married then the Administrator's Office can provide an affidavit for $30
